How Do Errors in Judgement Affect Success?

Mistakes are unavoidable, as each person can testify. Bad choices cannot be written off as mistakes, especially when numerous warning signs have been apparent. Bad choices are made when a person is unwilling to listen to the still small voice of God, wise counsel of friends, or the voice of common sense.

When reading the Parable of the Prodigal Son, it’s impossible not to ask, “Could he not tell his funds were diminishing and his friends were vanishing?” Perhaps his immaturity and lack of judgment prevented him from even thinking about the future.

His attitude may have paralleled so many in our culture today. Jesus faced this attitude from those who were convicted by his teaching and ministry. Their error in judgment eventually led to their downfall, the destruction of Jerusalem and the temple, as well as the nation itself. God forgives mistakes and wrong choices where there is acknowledgement and a willingness to change.

The Lord our God is merciful, and pardons even those who have rebelled against him.

~Daniel 9:9 The Living Bible

So remember the heights from which you have fallen, and repent [change your inner self – your old way of thinking, your sinful behavior – seek God’s will] and do the works you did at first [when you first knew me].

~Revelation 2:5 Amplified Bible

How Can You Manage Out-of-Bounds Anger?

How should you respond to someone who is determined to get revenge for pain and suffering caused by another person’s deliberate acts of aggression? Have you found it next to impossible to communicate with a person who is determined to get revenge?

I read about a soldier who was wounded by a sniper. He became so angry, he impulsively stood up and began shooting erratically to get revenge. He was then killed by the sniper. Although this is an unusual situation, out-of-control anger creates vulnerabilities that often prove to be regrettable.

If you’re the recipient of someone’s anger, if possible go and make amends to that person. Making amends includes correcting inappropriate behavior and apologizing. Micah 6:8 points out what is required in making things right. “Be fair, just, and merciful, and walk humbly with God.” While this is difficult, the Lord God will give you courage and strength to do it.

But you, Lord our God, are compassionate and forgiving, although we have rebelled against you.

God's Imperative: Forgiveness and Mercy

Is it possible to forgive those who deliberately hurt you without just cause? Your initial reaction could be to retaliate, determined to inflict equal pain and suffering. However, the Bible requires that forgiveness be given to an offender. God’s willingness to forgive us hinges on this command. It’s essential that you initiate forgiveness and mercy.

You may wonder how forgiveness is possible in the presence of anger and resentment, especially if you are the type who can forgive only when there is some degree of mercy felt toward the offending person. Some people will consider forgiveness only when love is the dominating component in the transaction.

When Jesus commands us to go and make things right with someone who needs forgiveness, he understands our hesitance to forgive and let go of anger and hurt. If compassion is missing for the offender, but you are willing to carry out Christ’s command, God is faithful and will empower you as you do what he requires. Your reward is the forgiveness of God.

“You must be merciful, as your Father is merciful. Don’t judge other people and you will not be judged yourselves. Don’t condemn and you will not be condemned. Forgive others and people will forgive you. Give and men will give to you – yes, good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over will they pour into your lap. For whatever measure you use with other people, they will use in their dealings with you.”
